What is a NSW Blue Slip Inspection?
An Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) report (known as a blue slip) verifies that an unregistered vehicle is safe, and meets design and identity standards.
All unregistered light vehicles need an AUVIS inspection report before they can be registered in NSW.
Eligibility
Get a Blue Slip inspection if your vehicle:
- registration expired more than 3 months ago
Note: you'll need to replace your number plates at a Service NSW Centre
- has been brought into NSW from another state or territory, or from overseas
- has no number plates
- was written-off, but has now been approved for re-registration
- requires adjustments to the registration records because something about the vehicle has changed significantly, such as a new engine
- needs defect notices cleared.
AUVIS Blue Slip inspection reports are valid for 42 days from the date of inspection.
If the vehicle is imported, you need to provide the authorised examiner with a Vehicle Import Approval issued for the vehicle by the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Safety checks (Pink Slip) for registration renewal
Most light vehicles more than 5 years old need a yearly safety inspection report (also known as a pink slip).
The 5-year Pink Slip exemption period is calculated from the month and year on the vehicle’s compliance plate. For imported vehicles, the 5-year exemption period is calculated from the month and year of the vehicle’s manufacture.
Your registration renewal notice tells you when you need an inspection. (Pink Slip)
